Hello class! Welcome to our online discussion board. I have decided to create a discussion board for a few reasons:
1) Sometimes you may have provocative questions or insightful comments regarding course materials outside of class time. This discussion board offers a forum for sharing these thoughts with your classmates (and me!) while they're still on your mind. Added bonus: any positive contributions made in our class discussion forum may positively affect your participation grade!
2) Active reading is a great way to process literature and retain information. While I still expect you to jot down notes to yourself as you read (which is always helpful for reading check quizzes!), this forum is another place you can write your thoughts. Sharing ideas you have during active reading - and reading your classmates' ideas - will deepen your analysis of the literature. I encourage you to respond to each others' notes thoughtfully and respectfully.
3) A discussion board offers a convenient forum for sharing relevant outside content. If you come across any interesting secondary sources, news articles, YouTube videos, etc. that relate to something we're covering in class, you can post them here for the class to enjoy. Items of particular interest may be shown and discussed during class, so please feel free to contribute!
4) I want to know what you find interesting. There are, of course, certain topics we will cover in class regardless of what is being discussed here. Ideas and questions that attract a lot of interest here, however, may be given especial consideration in class. You will get more out of class if our discussions speak to your interests, so the more I know about those interests, the better!
If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask me by email or in class. Happy reading!
